Barley Pound Farm was the site of a Roman mosaic, discovered by accident when a field was ploughed in 1817. It was originally part of a very fine Roman villa.
Many people went to see the mosaic and took home small pieces as a souvenir until nothing remained.
Fortunately a drawing of the pattern was made, now in the Hampshire Record Office.
Harroway is also one of the oldest roads in England. It was an ancient unpaved route which ran from the Cornish tin mines all the way to Dover in Kent. That’s over 200 miles, which would take more than 3 whole days to walk!
