The sculpture of St Michael guards the gravestone of Paul Springman who lived at Itchel Manor in Crondall and died in 1915.
It was made by Sir Hamo Thornycroft, a very famous sculptor who also created the statue of King Alfred in the centre of Winchester and Oliver Cromwell outside the House of Commons in London as well as many others in London and big cities around the world.
